Chipotle Will Now Let You Pay For Tacos And Burritos With Crypto

In yet another win for crypto, customers at Mexican-style fast-food restaurant chain Chipotle will now be able to pay using cryptocurrency.

Customers at popular Mexican-style fast-food restaurant chain Chipotle will now be able to pay using cryptocurrency through the digital payments platform Flexa. Cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly mainstream recently, with many large companies and organizations accepting them as payments. Some of the latest examples include Tesla and SpaceX, which are now accepting crypto payments for select merch on their websites.

While Tesla started accepting Doge payments back in January, SpaceX announced last week that it would soon accept the meme coin as payment for select merchandise. In addition to companies accepting crypto payments, some countries have already declared cryptos as official currencies. Last year, El Salvador became the first country to make Bitcoin legal tender, enabling citizens to pay for goods and services via digital tokens. It was followed by the Central African Republic, which recently adopted Bitcoin as legal tender alongside the Central African CFA franc.

Chipotle customers will now be able to pay for their tacos and burritos with cryptocurrencies. The crypto payments will be accepted through a platform called Flexa and will be available at all Chipotle locations across the U.S. In a press release announcing the new policy, Flexa said that users could pay through any Flexa-enabled wallet app, such as Gemini and SPEDN, both of which are available on Android and iOS. The platform supports 98 digital currencies, including popular ones such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. To make the payments, users will simply have to fire up their chosen app, select Chipotle as the vendor and get it scanned at a dedicated in-store scanner to make the payment.

Discount For Crypto Payments At Chipotle

Flexa has also announced a discount for people choosing to pay their Chipotle bill through crypto. The company is offering 10 percent off on purchases at any Chipotle outlet when using a Flexa-enabled app. The offer is valid through June 30, but there’s a one transaction limit, and the maximum discount is up to $10. Crypto enthusiasts are already lining up to take advantage of the new payment method. One Chipotle customer in Florida even posted a short video on Twitter about his experience with the new system.

Chipotle is far from the first restaurant chain to accept crypto payments, either in the U.S. or worldwide. That honor goes to Subway, which started accepting Bitcoin as far back as 2013, while Pizza Hut in Venezuela began accepting crypto in 2020. Other fast-food chains, such as Taco Bell, KFC, Chick-fil-A and Carl’s Jr., are also reportedly experimenting with blockchain technology, having filed for brand trademarks for NFTs.
