Kolkata: As the stretches near New Town Clock Tower and in front of Mother’s Wax Museum turn into popular hangout zones, New Town Kolkata Development Authority has decided to allow food trucks to park there for visitors to buy food and beverages.
The stretch near the clock tower in New Town, between two malls on two ends of the road, is being develoed by NKDA into a pedestrian and cyclist zone. The other area is in front of Mother’s Wax Museum, which attracts visitors from Eco Park.
Officials said maximum five food trucks would be allowed in each of the two zones. Each truck, which will operate for only 90 days at a stretch, will be available between 6:30pm and midnight on all days except Monday. The authorities have started inviting applications from food truck owners and operators.
Officials pointed out that food trucks, from which snacks as well as more wholesome food were cooked on the spot and sold, were widely popular in many cities. “Food trucks offering various kinds of food will add to the fun at the hangout spots and more people will visit those places to spend quality time,” said Samaresh Das, chairperson of New Town Forum and News, an umbrella organisation of residents’ forums.
NKDA officials said the food trucks would have to certain conditions, like not obstructing pedestrians’ or motorists’ movement and not causing harm to the environment and the surrounding area and people by ensuring cleanliness. The food and beverages to be sold will have to be safe and as specified by authorities.
NKDA also plans to hold e-auction for agencies to operate four shops at the Community Centre 1 and two shops at the Neem Banani Park in Action Area II.
