Frustration in Forest Fields as neighbours ‘miss out’ on restaurant turned down over noise concerns

Plans for a Greek restaurant in Forest Fields have been turned down over fears to do with noise – but local residents say they’ve ‘missed out’ on the new eatery. The restaurant off Berridge Road was earmarked to open in what used to be Umar Halal and Food Store.

A city council planning document, which confirmed the plans had been turned down, said potential noise issues were a factor. The document said the restaurant could “lead to noise and disturbance, having a detrimental impact on the living conditions of residents”.

But people in the area said the new restaurant would have been a welcome addition. Faizal Ahmed, a 28-year-old support worker from the area, doesn’t live too far from the site in question.

Mr Ahmed, who explained he wouldn’t have a problem with a new restaurant, said: “You can look at it from different ways: a business owner has just lost out on potential income from not being able to move into the store. People in the area have missed out on their being a new restaurant in the area.

“But I do understand why people on that street, especially those who are close [to the store], would have a problem. There’s already a shop across the street and then having a restaurant as a next door neighbour isn’t ideal.

“I personally wouldn’t mind [a new restaurant in the area but I’m not affected.” Plans put forward for a similar restaurant in 2003 were also turned down by the council.

Business owner Zahid Iqbal, 45, who lives in the area owns Khan’s Halal Meats. Zahid was also keen on a new restaurant. He said: “We’d like something different in the area, there’s all kinds around here.

“I think it [the old shop] needs to be something. I like the area, I don’t think people would mind the store turning into something new.” Retired Phil Green, 78, who lives in Forest Fields, said many businesses in the area were friendly.

“All the businesses around are great. I think that another restaurant would have done well, there’s already a lot of takeaways but if people on that street don’t want to be disturbed, that’s their right.” Plans for the restaurant were submitted on behalf of applicant Marra Mirjano.
