We tried the Green Island vegan restaurant which recently won the coveted North Wales cafe of the year award – Thomas Lewis

I have a confession to make. I’m not a vegan (as anyone who has read or watched my takeaway reviews will tell you).

Despite that, I have been to Green Island Bistro a few times before and always been impressed by the warm welcome, extensive menu and tasty dishes. Recently, they won the highly coveted North Wales Cafe of the Year award- a fantastic achievement for any establishment.

Located just off Rhuddlan’s busy High Street, the Bistro is extremely well hidden and offers a serene and relaxed dining experience. The cafe was the brainchild of Sarah Turner, who along with husband Jason and daughter Lucy, began the venture during the Covid pandemic.

They have gone from strength to strength over the past two years, culminating in the award, which they were presented with at the event in Cardiff. I park my car on Rhuddlan High Street and make my way to the Bistro.

The difference in atmosphere is almost tangible as I escape the gridlocked traffic jams of the high street to be greeted with an air of peacefulness. I’m greeted warmly by Sarah the owner and I take a seat before ordering.

I decide I’m going to give the chickpea tikka sandwich a try. To my delight, it arrives with a side portion of crisps – right up my street.

The sandwich, made with wholemeal bread, is absolutely delicious. Just the right blend of spiciness and soft texture, it makes a mockery of the “vegan food is bland” argument peddled by some.

I finish the sandwiches in record time and then inhale the crisps. The portion size is more than reasonable as well and for £5.95 you really can’t complain about the value on offer.

The chickpea tikka sandwiches were delicious

It’s quite clear to see just why the Green Island Bistro has proved such a hit with customers and industry award judges alike. It’s such a relaxed, welcoming place to eat and the food is fantastic.

So next time you fancy an escape from the hustle and bustle, whether you’re a vegan or not, step off the high street and enjoy half an hour at the Green Island Bistro.
